Norwegian Dole Horse Breeding | A Rare Draft Legacy
We are a small breeding farm focused on the Norwegian Dole horse, one of Norway’s native draft horse breeds and one of the rarest horse breeds in the world.
Originally from in the Gudbrandsdalen valley of Norway, the Dole horse was bred for versatility, endurance, and close partnership with people in demanding Nordic conditions. While traditionally considered a draft horse, the breed was historically used for far more than pulling work alone.
Today, the breed remains rare even within Norway, with only a few thousand horses left worldwide.
Our breeding program follows traditional Norwegian breeding philosophy, with strong focus on temperament, soundness, usability, and long-term genetic preservation.
Why people are drawn to the Dole Horse
Calm & Capable temperament:
In Norway, the Dole horse is often described as having a “cold head and a warm heart”. This means they’re steady, level-headed, and easy to work with, while still having the willingness and strength to get the job done. It’s a breed that has worked closely alongside people for generations in rough rural conditions, without losing its calm and reliable nature.
Our breeding program follows Norwegian breeding standards, where temperament and usability matter just as much as physical structure. The focus is not only on how a horse looks, but also on soundness, mindset, and creating horses that function well in everyday life for the long term.
Versatility by nature:
Although the Dole horse is traditionally considered a draft breed, it was never bred for pulling work alone. In Norway, these horses were expected to do a bit of everything: forestry work, farm work, riding, driving, and transportation across rough terrain and long distances.
That versatility is still a big part of the breed today. Dole horses are strong and durable, but also athletic, sure-footed, and comfortable to ride. Many are well suited for trail riding, pleasure driving, lower-level competition, and everyday recreational use.
For people looking for a calm, capable horse that can adapt to different kinds of work and environments, the breed offers a combination that has become harder and harder to find.
Carefully selected bloodlines:
All of our horses are registered within the Norwegian studbook system and come from approved bloodlines selected for health, temperament, structure, and long-term genetic diversity.
Because the breed population is small, preservation breeding comes with a real responsibility. Every pairing is planned carefully with the future of the breed in mind, not just the next generation.
Raised with herd life:
From a young age, our horses live in herd environments with extensive pasture turnout and regular daily handling. This approach is rooted in traditional Norwegian horse keeping, where sound-minded and adaptable horses were shaped not only through breeding, but also through life outdoors, in changing terrain, weather, and natural herd dynamics.
We believe that environment matters just as much as genetics when raising steady, reliable horses that are comfortable working closely with people.
A rare breed, even in Norway:
The Norwegian Dole horse remains rare even in its country of origin, with only around 3,700 horses left worldwide. Outside of Norway, the breed is still largely unknown, with only a very small number currently in the United States.
For many people, the breed offers something that has become increasingly hard to find: a calm, versatile horse shaped by generations of practical breeding, close partnership with people, and life in demanding Nordic landscapes.
Because our breeding program is intentionally small and focused on long-term preservation, only a limited number of foals are born each year. Many are reserved well in advance, sometimes before they are even born.

Approved, well-mannered, and purposefully chosen—these stallions represent everything we stand for in preserving the Dole breed.
Lundes Storm
2012, 3pr.
Storm is the kind of stallion that immediately puts people at ease. Calm, steady, and impressively grounded, he’s what we lovingly call “bomb-proof.” Whether he’s working around children,
well behaved around mares, or simply being handled day-to-day—his manners never waver. He’s soft without being dull, sweet without being passive, and stable in a way that makes you exhale.
If you’re looking for predictability in temperament without compromising on beauty or presence, Storm delivers. With abundant feathering, a thick mane, and a conformation that’s true to the Dole standard, he’s as striking as he is trustworthy. And with a lifetime breeding license behind his name, his quality speaks for itself—on paper and in person.
We’re proud to have him at the heart of our program—and happy to answer any questions about his availability. Contact us here.

Bekk Basse
2023
Still young and full of promise, Bekk Basse is showing all the right signs of becoming an exceptional example of the Dole breed. With striking feather, a full mane, and a strong, balanced frame, he’s
developing into a breed-typical stallion with a more athletic edge—making him an exciting prospect for those looking for a versatile, all-around partner with riding potential.
He is energetic, alert, and endlessly curious—always the first to investigate, never the last to try. He’s brave, social, and tuned in to his surroundings in a way that feels more intelligent than reactive. He’s still growing—both physically and mentally—but the foundation is there: a bold spirit paired with a trainable nature. Exactly what you’d hope for in a future breeding stallion or riding companion.
Bekk Basse isn’t of breeding age yet, but he’s one to watch. He’ll be available for stud starting in 2026. If you want to follow his journey or learn more. Contact us here.
Livs Gulltind
2024
Livs Gulltind is our youngest stallion prospect, and while he’s got a long way to grow, he’s already showing signs of the good stuff: curious, social, and always the first to come say hi
(or investigate whatever just moved). He’s sweet, bold, and honestly… kind of adorable.
The feathering is already coming in strong, and so is the personality. We’ve got high hopes for this one—and a few years to enjoy watching him grow into it.
Livs Gulltind will be available from 2027—until then, follow along as he finds his stride.
